“When I get a little money, I buy books. If any is left I buy food and clothes.” Erasmus

What is a Loaghtan?

  Two Books!

  Very unusually we’ve published two
new books during May. Both are
biographies of a sort, but they’re
very different.

  The Manx Cad
  The Remarkable Story of Alfred
Curphey, Squire of Ballamoar
By John Cannan

  Alfred Curphey wasn’t a very
nice man.

He was an inveterate rogue who
seduced the wives of the rich and
famous and was quite prepared to
disappear quickly leaving a trail
of debts behind him.

Using money paid from a cuckolded
husband to leave his wife alone,
Alfred built a palatial mansion at
Ballamoar on the Isle of Man where
he enjoyed a lavish lifestyle with his
latest conquest. He was an example
of the type of character we associate
with the late Victorian and early
Edwardian era: a notorious ‘cad’.

Nice man or not, his life is
fascinating.

  I Never Wanted a Pub
  By Celia Bannister
Celia Bannister never wanted a pub.
She thought that her future husband
would be an engineer. Then life took
a different turn, and the couple
became the youngest pub tenants
in North West England.

  I Never Wanted a Pub… is Celia’s
tale of the thirteen years she and her
husband battled leaky roofs,
a freezing kitchen and the difficulty
of getting customers in… and then
out again on time.

  Particularly memorable are the
larger-than life characters who share
Celia’s pages. Like the bridegroom
who dropped his false teeth down
the lavatory… or Tom, the road
mender who demonstrated that he
had no belly button… or Wing Co
who had an unfortunate encounter
with an animal laxative.

Celia is a born story teller who
recounts tales of flooded cellars, disappearing coach parties and
a near-miss by a crashing aeroplane
with equal gusto and glee.

Welcome to the Loaghtan Books website.
As a reader have you ever felt that the books you really want to own are just too expensive?

So did we!

To rectify that we at Loaghtan Books keep our prices as low as possible and the quality of our books as high as we can.

We are a small but growing independent
publishing house, founded to produce the sort
of books we want to read but can’t find elsewhere.
At the moment we publish only factual books,
but in the future, who knows…?

We don’t restrict ourselves to specialising in
certain subjects, preferring to base our books on what readers tell us interest them. Whatever the subject each publication is researched thoroughly and imaginatively illustrated. Our books aim equally at education, illumination and entertainment or, to put it another way, learning and fun.

Some of our books are based on unique historic material; manuscripts and photographs not previously published to which we have added commentary so that our readers can understand allusions in the text not obvious to modern eyes.

Other books are completely new, researched and written in house or by authors whose standards are as high as our own.

In this digital age, information can be can be seen
by thousands merely at the click of the mouse.
But how accurate is it? And who checks that it’s true? At Loaghtan Books we check. We verify everything we publish. And accuracy needn’t
be stuffy and boring. Look at our book pages
to find out.

Ramblings.
