  “Biography is life without theory.”

Learning from other
people’s experience

We’re using the term ‘biography’ very loosely. None of the books
in this section talks about the whole
of anyone’s life, and few of them
cover more than an interesting
few years.

What they do cover are periods of
upheaval or change either personally
or globally – or both.

As an expert in the brand new science
of radar technology, Clifford Cole
was sent to America during the
Second World War to demonstrate
British expertise. This at a time when
many people hadn’t travelled further
Than about fifty miles from where
they were born. He wrote about his
US tour in Invading America, 1943.

Adelaide Lubbock was the scion of
an aristocratic family, a professional
singer and the only woman on the
team trying to cope with the huge
movement of refugees in Austria after
the Second World War. A Cog in the
Wheel
is scathing about the idiocy
of bureaucracy. Nothing seems to
have changed in the seventy years
since Adelaide wrote; those involved
in the refugee crisis today would
recognise her frustrations.

Anyone with an interest in healthcare
should read Anne-Pia Nygard’s story
about how she copes with disability.
It’s horrifying, moving, and,
ultimately, triumphant.

Have a look at these and other
people’s lives through our books;
we hope you find something you like.
