Illustrated information and folk lore about native Manx plants
‘The wych elm is the only elm native to the Isle of Man… Elm does not decay when kept permanently wet and, as such, was historically used in water pipes as well as for shipbuilding.’ Blooming Marvellous, page 17
Well-known artist, Rosemary Greening, lives and works on the Isle of Man. The island has a huge variety of habitat for such a relatively small area, and therefore has an amazing array of trees and plants. Rosemary’s paintings encompass flora from the tiny wood sorrel to the soaring majestic oak and from plants which can be found almost everywhere to those restricted to one small area.
Her deep love for the island’s plantlife, and her support for the protection of the natural world led her to become involved in the Manx Wildlife Trust’s project to agree a list of trees native to the island. From trying to understand what counts as a native species and how it got here arose the idea for this book.
As well as providing an artistic record Rosemary also explains how the plants fit into their surroundings, and describes some of the ways they are interwoven with the stories of our ancestors and the wonderful places plants grow across the island.
