History is a Greek word
which means ‘investigation’.

  Loaghtan Books has made something
of a specialism of publishing books about history. Our very first
publication was A Brief History
of the Isle of Man
, now in a revised edition. Quite a number of our
other books also involve the
island’s history.

We’re not exclusively Manx publishers however, and we have a small but significant collection of books covering aspects of history of the UK, Austria and North America.
Some of our books show an almost
staggering lack of knowledge of
things we now take for granted.
In Invading America, 1943, for
example, none of the British
soldiers visiting the US know
what Coca Cola is.

On the other hand, things you think
might have changed, hopefully for
the better, have not. A Cog in the
Wheel
is one woman’s attempt, after
the Second World War to deal with
the huge movement of refugees in
Europe, and the red tape which
hampers her. Not much has changed.

It’s amazing what changes, but can be almost equally amazing what stays the same. The only then and now book we’ve published (to date),
The Manx Electric Railway; past & present demonstrates that change is not always predictable.

Have a look through our history collection; we hope you find something you like.
